Why was Danny brought up in silence by his dad?

That has been one of my favorite books since my sophomore English teacher assigned it back in high school.

Reb Saunders' reasonings for raising Danny in silence are complicated, but he does try to explain them to Reuven at the end of the book.

Danny was supposed to inherit his father's role as tzaddik, leader of his people. But even while his son was young, Reb Saunders could see Danny didn't have the compassion necessary for the position. He desperately wanted to find something that could transform a cold, mathematical genius into someone with a heart, who could use his brilliant mind in merciful ways. He had seen his own brother turn his back on his people and didn't want to see the same thing happen to his son.

"Better I should have had no son at all than to have a brilliant son who had no soul," he says.

The Reb says a tzaddik must know how to suffer for his people and carry their burdens as his own. When he sees Danny doesn't have this ability - rightly or wrongly - he turns to the silent treatment he learned from his own father.

If he is cruel to his son, it is to teach him pain so that Danny could have a better understanding of how to lead his people.

Even Reuven's father admits, "It is, perhaps, the only way to raise a tzaddik."
