I have been working as a Graphic Designer/Mac Operator for the past 7 yrs (I'm 24) I left school early (yr 10) and started working in a screen printing and art framers store as a general hand, I then worked my way up over the yr to be on the computers doing basic design for the company as that is what I expressed interest in.. I left this company after 2 yrs to work for a stationary printers - designing Business Cards & Letterheads etc.. Then after 2 yrs I started working at a Instant Digital Printing company.. here learning all adobe programs quiet proficiantly & prepress aswell, I am now looking after/managing a well known chain of Hospitals in australia, designing all work for them, being contracted through the Digital printing company.. I love the work but being a print company they do not pay too well & you do not get to do design all day, I am trying to get work with an actual Design Bureau but most said they wont look at anyone without a degree or diploma in design?? Why is this

A Degree, any Degree is simply the magic key that opens doors - as you are finding out.

With the experience you have and (probable) references that you will be given, you will have no problem obtaining a Degree in your chosen field with - accreditation of prior learning - If you can prove that you have the working experience that you say you have, then it counts as points towards a Degree. You could actually have earned yours already and may only need to attend classes for a short period of time.

You may be able to do it with the Open University (who do give accreditation for prior learning) that way you can still work and earn your Degree.

Remember, that piece of paper opens the right doors.

It is silly isn't it? I was a graphic artist and photographer for the US military for over six years. I went to school and learned how to do both. Yet the fact I do not have a degree makes me seem worthless to some employers, which is frustrating since I have an extensive portfolio. I learned it all! Everything from designing posters, business cards, flyers, websites, etc... Its sad to think they'd rather hire someone who got a degree after attending college classes for a couple years... rather than someone who has actual experience in CREATING a product. So I'm in the same boat with you. Good luck!!
PS - I visited Sydney a few years back. What an AWESOME city.. I'd love to live there! :)

Fair question!

You could probably teach in a college but not work in that Design Bureau, lol.

A degree in this area is not all about mechanics. A lot of it is being able to talk about the concept and process. One of the things practiced in college is the skills in "art speak". And I know it may seem like a lot of BS, but people are seriously into it.

Especially customers, managers and those who can't do what you do.

Being able to back up your work and defend it is one of the things taught in college and so the business may be looking for that.

It's a pity though because sometimes work is work and I'd rather have you doing it, someone who just knows what they are doing.

You definately need a degree. You will at least need a bachelors, some companies these days are calling for a masters. and go to a good school --- put some time into it. MOST importantly, get experience -- do internships, free...paid -- but do it -- get experience and a degree on your resume.
