Is it something to be worried about?

It has to do with their bad motor control. Controlling your limbs is a learned skill. My son did that. It's ok. His brain is just making pathways to all his various parts. Soon comes the sporatic kicking and arm jerks.
If you are worried, for any reason, write it down (I always had a long list) and take it to your doctor at each visit. They are used to nervous new moms!

What does it mean when a newborn leg starts to shake for maybe 5 seconds and then stops?

It's the muscles developing. During the first month or so, a newborn spends his time "uncurling" and stretching his legs and arms out to their full length. Sometimes they shake when this happens. If your baby's whole body is shaking, take him to the ER. If it's just his leg or arm, don't worry.

It may be a muscle spasm or a simple twitch but if it truly concerns you, talk to your pediatrician or nurse. I think it's wise to follow your gut reaction and err on the side of caution. This is a little person who is totally dependent on you so do what you feel is in the best interest of your child. Make the call and put your mind at ease.

I would ask the baby's doctor at their next appointment, but probably normal. Babies don't have control over their bodies for a while. Just keep an eye on it to make sure that it doesn't get worse.

A newborn does not have the entire nervous system developed at this point. The baby will jerk periodically, different parts of their body. Sometimes parts of the body at one time. But if it is a concern you feel is not normal, call or take your baby to the doctor...Congrats on your new arrival :)

No, I think it's just a quirk. It's pretty cute, lol. My baby girl (3 mos.) does that too sometimes.

its normal. Just their immature nervous systems, by the way, babies don't shiver, they have what is called black fat on their backs that they will burn for temperature control. Nothing to worry about.

My 2 month old's arm would sometimes "quiver". I believe it to be immature motor functions. Did you feel this "shake" while you were pregnant?

It's probably just a muscle spasm.
