Proabley because when most babies are out the our out like a light. you could hold them upside down and they would never know it.

Its not the amount they sleep its the quality of sleep.

it depends on how old the baby is, if it is colicky or not, some babies sleep all through the night, some don't at first, but they will change their sleeping habits... and newborns need 18 to 20 hours of sleep a day. and they need to eat about every three hours, so they sleep and eat and poop. but when they sleep, it is usually very peaceful and restful, and adults envy the little babe's ease of falling asleep.

it is a self explanatory phrase if you know anything at all about babies, dummy.

Babies sleep peacefully and deep. Sometimes can sleep through anything including something crashing to the floor in the next room.

I said the same thing to my husband when we first had our son. I told him that the term 'sleeping like a baby' actually means waking up every 2 hours screaming because you are hungry, wet and full of poop.

Babies are pictures of extremes, until they learn as they grow up to moderate their behavior. Extremes lend themselves easily to metaphor. "Cried like a baby" is one example. "Slept like a baby" is another. We say "slept like a baby", because when babies sleep, the extreme nature of their slumber makes it easy to understand how deeply they sleep, regardless of whether they eventually wake up and cry.

Babies have such lovely deep sleep and can fall asleep in a second. Just looking at them sleep is nice.

And they wake up full of energy. I have done that in years.

when my baby is really asleep I can't wake him up, I'll clap around him, tickle him, whistle, pick him up.. He wakes up when he wants to.... If you swaddle a baby tight, and feed 'em good, they'll sleep for a good while..

Because during the day, babies sleep through everything and are rarely disturbed by sounds. Night time is a different ballgame, however!!
