Exclude the nitrogen which we don't use.

We inhale a certain amount of oxygen (O2) and exhale carbon dioxide (CO2), so we have added a molecule of carbon (which comes from the carbohydrates we eat). We also breathe out water vapour, so we ought to exhale more gas than we inhale (by weight). It should be a greater volume as well, because it's warmer.

We must exhale AT LEAST as much gas as we inhale, otherwise we would explode! But I think we must exhale more, both by weight and volume.

Hi Cree,
We definitely inhale more.
It has been proven in scientific
and other tests, that we do not
get rid of all our toxins because
we are not taught to exhale fully.
In other words, we take in say
a 1/2 cup of air, out of which we
exhale only 1/4 of it. That is
why yoga and all the oriental
relaxation methods have a great
degree of success = breathing
properly. Try it yourself. Inhale,
through your nose, and then exhale
through your mouth until you feel you
will burst. You will notice the difference
after a few days. This is also very
active in sports.

So, remember to exhale! And of course
you'll have those breath mints handy ;)

After reading your question, I experimented. I inhaled in as much air as I could and tried to exhale about half as much air only. After several attempts I felt uncomfortable. It seems you will eventually end up exhaling as much air as you inhaled. So yes your inhaled and exhaled air are just about the same.

The amount of air you inhale equals the amount you exhale.

If you inhaled significantly more you'd faint. If you exhaled more your lungs would collapse and then fill with blood.

Now, we suck air in "harder" and with more pressure than we breathe it out. So you spend less time breathing in than you do breathing out.

So you spend more TIME exhaling than you do inhaling, because exhalations tend to be gentler.

A very ingenious doubt !

A part of air that we inhale is used to oxidise food and release energy. This air becomes a constituent of our body until it is released by exercise and other activities
Hence we inhale more than we exhale

When do you Inhale two times in a row. Or Exhale two times in a row without inhaling again. Not often. They are Equal!

its probably the same otherwise your lngs would continually expand or decrease over time. if you are a training athlete you might increase your lung capacity over time or if you are aging your lung capcity might decrease, but on average the volume u inhal eis equal to what you exhale
