I went in for a vaginal ultrasound today and was told that my baby must have died because no heartbeat was detected. I am 9 weeks pregnant and have a tilted uterus could that have any affect on detecting a heartbeat? anyone else been through this and the doctor be wrong?

If your uterus is tilted backwards or you are a bigger person that could have posed a problem. If they could clearly see the heart though and saw that it wasn't beating, then you probably lost the baby and I'm very sorry. I wouldn't get a D&C though, I'd wait it out, because they have been wrong about this a lot! If you choose to get a D&C make sure you at least get a transvaginal ultrasound first. GOOD LUCK! I hope so badley that everything is okay.

If your baby is younger than 8 wks., it is possible that they would not pick up a heartbeat. I went in at 9 wks., and they told me that the baby's heartbeat had just started earlier that week. So, your best bet may be to wait another couple of weeks, before you do anything else. If you did have a miscarriage, I am soo sorry, I know exactly what you are going through. I had the same thing happen to me earlier this year, and it truly is difficult.

I am going through the same situacion. I'm 10 weeks (according to my LMP) But I know I'm actually 8 weeks since my husband came from his deployement for only two weeks. I went to get my first ultrasound yesterday (vaginal)...the baby was there...but no hearbeat. I know its hard...all I've been doing is reading up on it...I'm trying to find some hope out there. All I do is cry! So I do know what you are going through.

From what I've researched there is a good chance that they are right :( (tear)

Having a vaginal ultrasound is more accurate than the other one (outer). Ask them to take blood work (which is what I'm planning on doing today) so that they can check your hormone level. If you had blood work done before this they can compare to see if it has gone down...if it has..I'm sorry..but they are right. If it has gone up then they are wrong. I'm not planning on getting the D&C done..maybe I'm in denial and just dont want to accept it yet but if it is true my body will naturally discharge it when its ready.

I wish you the best...my prayers are with you

Kenni ... I've had the same thing happen to me. I was 2 1/2 months pregnant ... went for an ultrasound, and they could not find a heartbeat. They did a blood tests ... which was inconclusive... my pregnancy hormone level had neither risen nor declined. So, then they did another ultrasound a week later. There was still no heart beat ... and sad to say, no baby. My body had absorbed the baby, but the placenta kept growing, thus, I was still gaining weight and getting larger in the tummy area.

I'm sorry, but it doesn't sound good. I had been trying for 10 years for a baby, then lost it. I truly know how you’re feeling ... *hugs*

I have heard that it can be harder to detect a heartbeat with a tilted uterus, but that is usually with a external ultra sound. I would have the doctor perform a blood test. This is a two step test. They draw one day and two days later they draw blood again and check the results. HCG levels double every 2 days, so if your baby is still alive, your levels would still be rising. Good luck to you. I hope everything is ok. I have had 3 early miscarriages before having my son, so I know how devestating it is.

It would be more pleasant to tell you that the doctors always goof on this, but that probably isn't the case. You can give it a little time for hope, and we'll hope with you. Ask the doctor if perhaps there is some chance.

About half of all conceptions don't work out for some reason. The reason isn't always clear, and it doesn't mean that you won't be successful next time.

You could always get a second opinion.

The tilted uterus would probably not affect the detection of the heartbeat.

I am so sorry.
