We have a futon in our home office, which doubles as a second guest room & it's not as comfortable as a mattress. Go with the mattress.

i would go for a mattress cause It seems more permanant and I didn't want to live like it was only temporary. but if you don't have much cash a futon would be cheaper. but i think a little investment in the mattress would work out better in the long run cause you would not have to make a repeat purchase as soon.

It really depends on what will suit your needs. But, I would suggest a futon because there are mattresses out there with inner spring support. The basic ones you buy at say Wal-Mart are okay for awhile, but you get what you pay for. If space is an issue, try an aerobed.

i could say spend the thousand to get a competent futon or settee mattress because of the fact a low-priced futon is nearly a mattress of nails. yet confident i'm with you i think of a user-friendly ole settee is a waist. I grew up with sleep sofas they seem to be a ought to-have for me.

You could sink in a mattress and oversleep and you'll be late for class. Plus a soft mattress could cause you back pains.
A futon is relatively thin, you won't sink in it, you are fully stretched, and you could just lay it on the floor while reading and just roll over to sleep.
If you are used to soft beddings and comfort, go for mattress.
If you want a practical alternative, go for futon.
If you are constrained for space, go for futon, you could roll it after use and tuck in a corner, unobstrusive.

Pillow top mattress. Futons tend to lose their fluff after awhile. You can feel the bars from the frame when you are laying down.

Depends if your gonna be in a dorm a futon would probly be better as it would be 2 items in one. If it's your own apartment or house I would suggest a matress.

I'd suggest a nice and comfy bed actually, but it's not a choice so...
