It is called simplification. You cannot work on a, it has no assigned value.

-31+26 could be worked, however. -31 is a negative number, 26 is a positive number and the mathematical operation is addition (of integers of unequal signs).

That will give you -5.

The resulting expression, thus, is -5 + a.

As a rule, the unquantified algebraic term precedes the quantifiable, therefore:

-5 + a = a + (-5) = a-5.

Maybe what you meant was simplify the expression -31 + 26 + a.

you can simplify it by combining like terms, but you cant solve an expression which is what u have displayed. combining like terms gives a-5

you cannot solve something like that because it is not an equation. what you've written is a mathematical expression. if you made it equal to something then you can solve it using simple algebra.
