wind sprints are awesome but they are mainly used for LOOSENING up as part of warm-ups.

of course, stretching and warming up properly is essential in peak workouts and in-game performance so yes, in a sense it should help you be better conditioned.

If that's all you do it probably won't help your conditioning much. Generally you need at least 20 minutes of continuous exercise to receive cardiovasuclar benefits. That's why in football they do wind sprints at the end of practice. Otherwise, you can do interval training, i.e. sprint for 400 yards, jog for 400 yards. Do that for 20 - 30 minutes and you'll get into great shape

When I was in soccer we did 70 yard sprints for about 40 minutes with a minute break between each sprint. Tiring practices but it got us conditioned very well.
