Is this your first bike? If so, go with a 600...looks good but not an overdose on power (the Ninja comes in 600). Although, out of the ones you've chosen, I'd chose a GSX-R...the baby Hyabusa. :)

It will be good for you to have a few years behind the wheel before tackling a motorcycle, because you need to learn how to read traffic and understand how weather conditions affect a vehicle's handling. It is EXTREMELY important to always look ahead and avoid bad situations, because there's a big difference between cars and motorcycles in an accident!
It's just that whole thing that your parents hammer on you about responsibility matters most on a motorcycle. If you get caught shoplifting you get in trouble for a while and do community service, but if you screw up on a bike it could be game over, no reset button. Understand?
The two bikes you have listed, the GS500F and the Ninja 500R, would be decent first bikes as long as you respect them. DO NOT even look at a GSX-R of ANY size as your first bike, and stay away from any Yamaha R-somethings, Honda CBR's, ZX6R's and anything you see on that stupid SuperBikes show on television. Nothing personal, but I promise they are more than a newbie can handle. You're looking for your first bike, not your last, right?
I ride an '06 ZZR600, and I woudn't recommend it as a first bike either. It doesn't have quite the teeth that the above bikes have, but it's still plenty fast (top speed of 155 vs 160?). My first bike was a Suzuki SV650S, and though it almost got away from me at first it was a very easy bike to learn on.
The two most important things that could save your life are taking a training course, like the ones offered by MSF, and ALWAYS wearing proper gear. A helmet doesn't do you any good by itself, and I can tell you from personal experience that it's very nice to have all your skin intact after a crash.
You say that you're not interested just to be "cool", so keep that in mind when you ride. To REAL motorcyclists, it doesn't matter what you ride, where you ride or how fast you ride; just that you ride- period! Take the time to really learn, and you'll be riding long after the "cool" kids wreck themselves acting like Squids.
Good luck!

Either the GS500F or Ninja 500R. The other ones have enough power for a small car, and handling that responds almost instantly even if you've given them the wrong input. Accidentally grabbing a bit too much throttle or brake when you're cornering hard on an all out supersport can easily give you a bad case of road rash. A 500 will give you more time to correct your mistakes.
Either one of the 500's will have enough power for freeway riding, but as they are a lot more forgiving and predictable, you'll have a much easier time learning both the basics of riding and getting to really push the bike to its limits.
I also recommend that you take the MSF class or another class that gives you a couple days of practice riding with a qualified teacher. I took this and found it very useful.

None of the above for a first timer and in highschool. Anything from a 175cc to a 300cc is plenty enough for a beginner. Dirt bike experience doesn't count for street bike riding as the only thing you 've gained is how to shift ,start out and stop Street riding is a whole new beast with a lot more focus involved. Is there some girl you trying to impress? Vespa's seem to turn young girls heads as they consider them "cute" Remember ,"ya got to crawl before ya walk" My first street legal bike was a Sear's 50cc honda My current bike is a Harley Heritage Springer

The ZZR600 wouldn't be bad. It's not as radical as the other 600's, such as the ZX6R. It's a little heavier, sure to be not as fast, and it has a nice low seat height.
The Kawi 500 I don't know much about, but it's light with a low seat height, and would be ok for a beginner.
I wouldn't recommend the 750's as a first bike.

My first bike was a Honda & I highly recommend them. They're dependable and sturdy. At one point I owned 5, everything from a Trail 70 to a CM 500. That was as far as I was competent to ride since it was the only one I could sit flat-footed.
Whichever one of them you choose, just make sure to wear safety gear & learn to drive defensively.
And don't be sorry for asking questions. That shows intelligence and thought. There's never a dumb question & everyone has a whole lot to learn on any given subject.

of the ones you mentioned i would recommend the gsf500 or the ninja 500. ideally since this would be your first bike i would recommend something in the 250 range such as the ninja 250. learn to ride it and then move on up as you gain experience. even some of the 500's listed above can be intimidating to a beginner. don't jump in over your head to begin with or it could ruin your experience of motorcycling from the start.
