I felt so bad for the little child. This woman was taking her frustations out on the child. Should we speak up if we feel a child is being treated harshly? Or is it none of our business?

It depends on what exactly it was that you observed. If she was being abusive for no reason, than I think you have valid reason to be concerned. However, if she was correcting her child for a legitimate reason, like trying to prevent her from running out in the street, or not running off with strangers. In these cases I think you should mind your own business. All parents have a God given right to discipline their own children. Sometimes a parent will have to discipline their kids rather harshly to avoid serious behaviors like touching a hot stove. That kind of discipline will help children avoid serious injury and even death. It depends on the child as to what kind of discipline is appropriate. Since no two children are the same, all types of discipline will not work with all children. It is up to the parent to determine how their child will respond and what it takes to get the child's attention. This country needs to give discipline back to the parents and take it out of the hands of nosy bystanders and the state. We have all seen how the state fails to raise responsible children. This job belongs to loving parents who care for their children enough to correct them. I do not condone beating children and causing them serious injury. However, a corrective smack on the butt by a calm parent is really a good thing. Never hurt me. I turned out ok. My grandma was a little southern woman who could wieild a switch like Zorro! She was 92 pounds soaking wet, but could outrun any kid on the block. If it had not been for her God knows how I would have turned out!

It depends upon where you work. You can say, I know kids can be a handful, is there anything I can do to for you?

If you work at a store, ask the parent if you can give the child some gum, candy, or something else that would stop the child from being hit. Or, quietly go to your manager and tell him/her what is happening.

If they are in a public place and she is actually hurting the child instead of discipline than YES we have to speak for those who can not. I mean if she had just gave the kid a swat on the bottom and that was it then it would be no...make sure that she is being inappropriate before you call. Maybe you could try to talk to her but she may not respond to you.

You can say whatever you chose to say. This is America. It may help her to wake up or take a deep breath and calm down. Or she may turn her aggression on you. Or if she is an abuser she may later really give it to the poor kid. But when it comes to abuse, kids are everybody' s business. I am not sure what Whacking means in your terminology. In LA the law is, i think, one spank, on the behind, open palm, not hard.
Personally i can't stand seeing that sh*! either!!!

It is very sad to see something like that ... I once saw a very frustrated father smacking and cursing his child in public .I am so sorry that I did not right away consult the nearest police officer .

All frustrated parents are not abusing their children. Sure, parents shouldn't hit out of frustration...but instead of just going and making parents more mad..why not offer your help to a frustrated parent? Maybe they need to just talk to another adult and vent for a second and then they would be fine.

You are actually bound by law to report any suspected child abuse to the proper authorities. I wish to God someone had reported my mother...

You need to bring this up with your boss. It's his/her decision how situations like this would be handled in his/her place of business.

I usally point and laugh so the lady can see me do it. If she confronts me I say something to her, usually they just stop hitting thier kid.
