Why can you not mix chlorine and bromine in pools or spas?

Many sites say it is dangerous to mix these chemicals, but do not explain why. Can anyone tell me what happens or why it is dangerious?

If you mix the chemicals directly you could release Bromine gas, which is poisonous. If you mixed them individually, in the tub, your result would turn the water a nasty brown. Which would probably stain everything it touched. So, follow the directions.
