Depends on what you want to use it for. I am a professional writer and I don't have the latest and greatest, but I did upgrade it to the max so I can watch DVDs on it and what not. I paid $150 on ebay and did...about $100 worth of upgrades. (I have a Thinkpad A20m)

Hope this helps.

"normal" specs as in general usage and nothing too over the top should be as follows;

Pentium 4 1.0 ghz or higher
at least 1 gb of RAM, 512 is okay as well
at least a 60-75gb hard drive, 100gb is preferable.
64mb video card
dvd/cd burner combo (trust me, you'll be glad you have one)
built in wireless capability

if you get something that has these specs then you should be okay for quite some time. if you need something more graphic oriented than forget the above and max out the specs.

Check out CompRec.com, they have specs for several different desktops and laptops. Choose one and then compare prices at different manufacturers. With a consistant set of specs you can compare apples-to-apples from different manufactuerers.

depends. What're you using it for? gaming? surfing? School work?

What ever it is get a dual core processor, at least 1GB RAM, 80GB Hard drive, Wireless G built-in, DVD burner. This is the bare minimum.

After that, it depends on what you're using it for. If gaming, add a high powered graphics card, more ram, and the fastest cpu possible.
