To track down your problem, you should try to figure out the circumstances under which it occurs. Other posters have suggested quitting any other applications that might be running while you are gaming. That's good advice. For example, if your mail program is checking the mail periodically, that could explain everything.

The video ram explanation would be believable if the slow-down always occurs in the same physical location in the game. If so, then perhaps the number of polygons is too much for your video card to handle. You need more information to rule this one out entirely.

As for emulators, they pretend to be another kind of machine. This actually increases the load on your system, since the computer now has to do all the gaming stuff as well as translate instructions for emulation purposes. This certainly won't help you.

You should really split these questions up. I will take the first one. If it intermittently runs great and then poorly other times, most likely it is because you are running too many programs in the background. When gaming, don't have any other programs running that are on your task bar (below). Also hit ctrl+alt+del and look under processes to see which are using the most memory (RAM). You can "trial and error" here and end processes that will free up resources so that it will not hinder your games. But beware that some are system processes and will crash your pc. Just reboot and start over. Regards.

Several homegrown things come to mind:

1. Games are mostly graphics. Graphics create huge files clogging your memory.
2. Are you running a complex screensaver in the background? Using memory at the same time.
3. Are there any programs you can remove from Startup?
4. When was the last time you cleaned house: Disk Cleanup, Error Check, Defrag, Virusscan ... These should be done regularly. The more frequently you run them, the less time they take.

If all else fails - maybe another memory chip is in order.

Determine how much video ram you have and check the requirements of the game. Most standard off-the-shelf PC's have less than 10MB of video Ram. Even cheap programs may require 20 or more. What happens to your computer is that the program is running faster than the picture can show. The video drags the processor down causing errors.

This could be happening b.c your computer might not have enought memory, to run the game to its full potential all the time, and then theres the issue of too many things on your computer also.

could be a memory issue, or you have too many TSR prgs running, like antivirus progs.
maybe your video card ain't up to specs for the game.

you can do a ctrl/alt/del/ to see how many progs are running, a game like that uses alot of resources.
