i mean everyone over the age of 10 learns to accept that not everyone is meant to be a supermodel, or a genius, or to have the perfect body
so wouldnt it stand to reason that some people simply aren't meant to be, or aren't capable of, being happy as well?

urbancoyote, if i could pick a best answer now i would, you totally nailed it....though ten points hardly does your answer justice
what's with this crap that we're all equally motived and from there we choose to be happy, or choose to be unhappy, or choose to be depressed, or blah blah blah.
why is it when it comes to happiness we all live in this world of puppy dogs and fairy tales where we can choose whatever we want.
when in every other aspect of life we are forced to accept the fact that most things are beyond our control:
why does it have to be a question of choice, or of genetics, what if it's just as much a question of philosophy and personality?

I'm shocked by the trippy, Dale Carnegie, bigotted answers you're getting to this question.
YES, some people are inherently and by nature melancholy.
And you can tell who they are! They are the ones who enjoy funny stories and jokes, who will honestly thank you for retelling a funny story, becuase they particularly need to be cheered like that.
Those with a melancholy nature admire the grand masters who triumph over grief -- the comedians, most of whom themselves are melancholy, also.
The resopnses you're getting follow a trippy, robotic formula in which all of us are supposed to be equally happy unless we "choose" to be unhappy or "choose" not to accept "therapy" from some quack who will try to hypnotize people out of being who they really are. Ugh.
This bias for trite, perkiness makes me very cynical. There's nothing wrong with a melancholy and somber nature -- if you don't believe that, get some audio CDs of the major Rachmaninoff symphonies and piano concerti.

I have run into a few people in my life that are just never happy. There job always sucks and if that's fine, the home life is bad. It is always SOMETHING. I think there are some people that are not happy unless they are unhappy and have something to complain about. And if there is nothing to complain about they will find a way to MAKE something wrong.
AHhhhh, out of breath after venting to you.

you yourself choose to be happy or not...and the other things you mentioned are superficial...happiness comes from inside not based on other things... hence if i wanted to be a genius but realized that i could never be that i would be happy with other things that i could be like having fun with friends or family, or seeing the other joys that life can hold...it all depends on the person and how much they are willing to have fun...

No, I don't believe that anybody is meant to be unhappy. What I do believe is that there are people who are "unequipped" to be happy, who simply don't know how. And learning, while it can be done, ain't especially easy.

I've wondered this myself. What makes people think they deserve the things that would make them happy? I totally agree with you.

I wrote a long long answer to this one but then I saw it was too personal and I'm not posting it. So what do I have to say?
That's something I'd like to know...hmmm...
