The appendix serves no known function in the body and some theories say it is left over from some previous evolutionary stage in human existence

In herbivores the intestines are longer than in humans and the appendix is bigger as well. The purpose of their appendix is to help break down the plants they eat (cellulose is hard to digest and require certain bacteria to do so). Also, in some animals the appendix serves immune function. It is considered a vestigial organ in humans b/c it serves no known function. Apparently Leonardo da Vinci thought that it's purpose was to expand and hold excess gas so it didn't cause your colon to explode. Basically, it can get infected pretty easily and cause serious problems since it is just a dead end tunnel off your colon (stuff gets in but not out).

Appendix serves as strainer of the unwanted particles in the body. But more often than not, the amoeba used that appendix as their sanctuary of breeding place.
