I think world wind is amazing, and has some really great hardcore datasets by default.

It really looks like Google Earth was an idea ripped off world wind, but in terms of user-friendliness I think Google Earth is actually a lot better for the everyday user. It also has great integrated features such as the Google Sketchup thing that allows you to see 3D models of buildings etc.

I have both installed on my computer, but I use Google Earth much more often.

World Wind Vs Google Earth

World Wind has some very good features, such as the playing of weather animations, and has a better range of imagery data sets compared to Google Earth (good for geographic imagery nerds). However, if you are looking for something that lets you roam all over the world, and look at places with the most amount of detail, then Google Earth is the one for you.

I doubt Google Earth (formally a company called Keyhole) ripped off anything from World Wind. WW runs on the Microsoft .net environment only while Google Earth runs on multiple platforms. They do share datasets though - the Landsat 7 imagery and the SRTM height data, but that's fine as other companies produced these and are licenced to both GE and WW.

3d planet weather, or 3d weather planet... whatever it's called beats them both.
