I recommend Happy Traum's guitar course which comes with chord pictures and lessons as well as fingering and a CD to play duets with him and tune your guitar.

You'll have to practice a lot to learn the guitark, though!

Like just about anything in life, you can learn with regular practice. If you have a hard time motivating yourself to practice regularly, hire a teacher, who can keep you on track.

I used the Hal Leonard guitar method, which I thought was great. You can probably use any beginning-level guitar book.

After getting to about book 3 (the point where you finally know a handful of chords), you're ready to branch out on your own and start learning songs that you want to learn. There's nothing wrong with continuing with the guitar method, but practicing a song that you want to learn can be very motivating. There are plenty of sites on the Internet where people have figured out the chords for popular songs and posted them for people who want to study. tabcrawler.com is one of them. There's also any mirror of OLGA (just google it and you'll find it).

Some well-known songs that are especially easy to play:
Blowin' in the Wind by Bob Dylan
If I Had a Hammer
La Bamba
Closer to Fine by the Indigo Girls
and many, many more

(Popular music based in American musical structures follows a limited set of musical forms, so once you learn those forms, you're good to go.)

Please resist the urge to pick one very difficult song and practice away on that until you learn that. For example, many people learn how to play a very difficult song like "Stairway to Heaven" when they are beginning guitarists. While people who do this are very good at playing "Stairway to Heaven", they usually can't play anything else. Playing songs that are easy and then working up to more difficult ones will ensure that you develop the technique to play whatever you want when you are ready.

Be very careful at the beginning of your studies to make sure that you are holding the guitar and your fingers right. It will take a lot of work to break bad habits later if you don't use proper technique now, because eventually you get to material that is so difficult that you can't play it unless you use proper technique.

Also, don't use an electronic tuner, or if you do, use it only to tune one string and then tune the rest by yourself. People who always rely on the electronic tuner seem to never develop the listening skills necessary to be a very good musician. Remember, you have to listen to yourself to see what you are doing well and what needs to be improved. Listening is a big part of playing music.

Have a great time learning to play the guitar! I taught myself years ago and it has provided me much enjoyment.

Go to a music store and get a good beginners acoustic guitar. Buy some chord books and practice that first and then get into scales and tabs etc.
