Quick sand is the name used to describe sand that will not support the weight of a standing person and is usually found on the bend of rivers. Sand accumulates on the bends through back eddies, but become unstable when the underlying sand is washed away. A person would simply disappear in one moment, and not like the sticky mud holes you see in Tarzan movies. Peat bogs are really like the latter mud holes, or tar pits where most ancient bones are found.

It's a great urban myth that's been perpetuated time and time again in the movies.
It's a great device for a horrible death - sucking you down faster and faster as you struggle, and the dramatics effects are even better - the hand slowly disappearing in the pool of quicksand with your last remnants of breath bubbling up next to it at the surface.
What a great myth, eh? Too bad it isn't true - I can think of a few people I would like to take for a nice hike through the jungle...........

It's true. But you don't sink real fast and you can get out, it's just hard.
With quicksand, the more you struggle in it the faster you will sink. If you just relax, your body will float in it because your body is less dense than the quicksand.
