If an heir to the throne sought a career in politics and became prime minister, and the occasion arose for him to become king, could he legally be king and prime minister?

This would be impossible, unless he renounced his claim to the throne. Until 1999 a few members of the royal family sat in the House of Lords, including Prince Charles, but since the 1920s it has been established that the prime minister cannot sit in the Lords - the 14th Earl of Home had to give up his title to become PM in 1963. The holder of a peerage can now sit in the Commons (as Lords Lothian, Hailsham and Thurso do) but it is unlikely any party would nominate the heir to the throne as a candidate, and it is probably illegal for him to stand. Thankfully we are not like Saudi Arabia where thousands of princes run the government.

It's a free country! But the Head of State has to approve the next Prime Minister.... if the heir to the throne lost to a rival polititian in an election....the would have the humiliation of "approving" the person who beat them!

There is not enough intelligence in the whole 'Royal' family to run a 5 acre field without livestock than run a country. Prime minister - right. And that idiot who says that anybody who doesn't agree with him is uneducated should grow up and perhaps get an education if it is at all possible.

For the past several decades to be Prime Minister you must have a seat in the House of COMMONS. Politicians who were in the House of Lords had to give up their peerage to be in the Commons.

In England, the royal family is not eligible to run for public office. They can voice their political opinions. So no is the answer to your question.
