It is not legal to be publicly intoxicated. not legal to drive while intoxicated, and not legal to kill someone due to a "blackout".
A person in the privacy of their own home, who is intoxicated cannot be arrested, unless they are a threat to themselves or someone else. There are laws in place to punish law breakers, including drug pushers, drug users, child molesters, thieves, murderers, and stock fraud. In the 1930's Prohibition did not work, as people continued to drink "home brews", and organized crime handled the sales. The US government receives a sales tax on alcohol sales today. Certain things are indeed wrong, and while we may be offended we do not have the right to generalize.
Sounds like this subject is very personal to you, and if there is a tragedy for you my condolances

Drinking and driving isn't legal.
If you drink at home and don't drive, you're not likely to kill anyone.
Only yourself if you're an alcoholic.
But then, cigarettes are legal, too. And they kill plenty of people.
Just being stupid kills a lot of people.
We can't make that illegal.
Besides, if alcohol was illegal, that wouldn't keep people from buying it and drinking it. It would just be illegal.
Over this past weekend, we had a police captain AND a fire chief arrested for drunk driving in my city. Pathetic.
My first husband was killed by a drunk driver.
You're right on by saying DUI should have harsher punishments. Yet taking someone's license away just results in them driving without a license in many cases. Drunk. Get them off the road with serious jail time, right from the first offense.

Making something illegal will not take away the risk of it.
As history has proven, if you make something illegal, it becomes more dangerous.
The problem isn't with the alcohol itself, but with the abuse thereof. Drinking and driving IS illegal, and should be - but people still think they "can handle it." The answer is really more education on the matter - making it illegal and covering up the problem is not going to solve anything.
In the end, though, there is no way to make the world really safe - there will always be things that happen, there will always be people dying. Some caused by drunk drivers, sure - but also caused by road rage, or people on cell-phones, or kids racing.

I do agree that a DUI should take away your license for ever. People that irresponsible shouldn't be out on the streets, but as long as you don't get behind the wheel, drinking too much pretty much only hurts you, and makes you look like an idiot.

You make a good point, but there are many other things in this world that cause deaths. Should cars be illegal? Should planes be illegal? Should sidewalks be illegal because people can slip on ice on them and hit their head? I mean.. the list goes on and on. Yes I realize alcohol is a substance that people choose to drink, but it's all about being responsible. I drink at home, or make SURE to have a designated driver or taxi service. I'm sorry for your loss, and hopefully people will be more responsible.

Ever hear of Al Capone? final time Alcohol became into made unlawful, gangsters grew to grow to be ridiculously effectual. Why dont you sweep up on some history. The gangsters merchandising unlawful alcohol would be 100x greater effectual and violent than some potheads merchandising unlawful weed. we'd create a million greater issues than we'd remedy.

well, i totally agree with you. i have had a few very close friends die from alcohol related situations. not to mention my whole childhood was messed up due to alcoholic family members. it's horrible, however, if it were made illegal, people would do it anyway. i do think that it's backward that alchohol is legal, when it kills so many, and pot is illegal, when it kills noone. i don't even smoke, but i feel strongly about this. i don't know how it will change. you're totally right.

a person can't just ban everything for everyone else simply because they do not like it
if that were morally acceptable, paisley would have been history eons ago
why are pencils legal? they are sharp and stuff ... you could "possibly" kill someone
you can't ban steak because babies can only drink milk ... you can't penalize the responsible people in the universe because there are irresponsible people in the universe. drinking (and even getting drunk for that matter) doesn't automatically mean you will be driving, duh. THINK!
thinking like yours leads to dictatorship. maybe you wouldn't have those thoughts if your wigga ballcap on backwards wasn't cutting off the circulation to yo head
as long as someone isn't hurting anyone, MIND YOUR OWN DAMN BUSINESS!

Penguin,
I've been asking that question for years! And my guess is,is that the people in power(in the moonshine days)wanted to drink,so they legalized it. And I think that if more of them smoked marijuana, that would probably be legal too!
It's sad,what's allowed. Y.
