Quick background .. I am moving from NJ in January.. I'm a hairstylist but I need to finish up about 4 months of school in California to get licensed there.. I'll be attending Paul Mitchell The School .. but I need help deciding on which location.. The first is in Costa Mesa and the second is in Alhambra. I would like to live in an area that is about a half hour drive to one of the schools.. I would also like to be as close to west hollywood and santa monica as possible, being that those would be the ideal areas for a hairstylist to work. I am going to pick the school based on the advice of others since i'm not very familiar with the area. So I guess somewhere that is in between Santa Monica and Alhambra or in between Costa Mesa and Santa monica... I am a student so I am on a budget.. I have a car .. Hope i've provided enough information pleaseeeee help me!!

Here is a website that may prove to be very valuable to you:

http://www.bestplaces.net/city/

The site allows you to compare one city/area to another. You can get a good idea as to the cost of living in each as well as nearby shopping and other attractions.

To look at apartment rentals, why not try:

http://realestate.yahoo.com/

Another popular site is:

http://www.apartments.com/

You can also try Craigslist at:

http://www.craigslist.org/about/cities.html

Another option is to try this site run by e-bay:

http://www.rent.com/

You can also look up the area newspapers online and look at the classified ads for apartments or real estate. You will also get an idea as to the flavor and culture of the areas you are considering after following the newspapers for a couple of weeks.

Good luck with your career and move.

Cosa Mesa is great!! I love hanging out. Barely immigrants, barely tagged up and very close to the beaches!!! Santa Monica is also close to the beaches but has the two cons and some. I personally don't like the neighborhoods or their shopping centers etc. On top of studying you'll have a comfortable stay as well as a nice party area. Well, why don't you check out your commute cause out here in California the prices for gas are still HIGH and traffic is a bi**h! Costa mesa is a little further out according to the info you provided though. Have fun and good luck.

NONE of the places you mentioned are affordable on a budget (within any stretch of the imagination!)!

ALL of these places have VERY HIGH Rents -- in the stratosphere -- the places are VERY TINY, the cost of living (food, fuel, license fees for automobiles, insurance costs for autos, etc etc) is OUT of this world, and there is NOTHING Nice that I could EVER say that will change that fact.
