well tom ; just do that;

-(12 - 4x) + 8(10 - x) =
-12 + 4x + 80 - 8x =
(4x-8x)+ ( -12 +80)= 0
-4x + 68 = 0
- 4x = -68
x = -4 / - 68 = 4/68 = 17
x = 17

Good Luck.

You were missing a left parenthesis, or put an extra right parenthesis you didn't need/mean.

Missing left repaired:

-(12)(-4x)+8(10-x) = -(-48x)+(80-8x) = 48x + 80 - 8x = 40x + 80

-((12)-4x)+8(10-x) = -12+4x+80-8x = 68 - 4x

and if the right parenthesis after 12 was a mistake, 68 - 4x is again the answer

Umm if it is -(12)-4x+8(10-x) then the answer might be 68-12x, but check over it.
