better aerodynamics. it flies farther and faster than if you were to throw it all wobbly. test it out.
the how is a little different for everybody. basically you hold the football so that you're pinky and ring finger are in the 3rd and 1st laces, respectively. throw the ball and snap your wrist so that the ball rolls out of your hand in a clockwise motion. the better you snap your wrist, the tighter the spiral.
it takes practice but is not difficult to do.

throw from the shoulder, through the elbow and hand - the ball should be cradled with one end in the hand at right angle to the hand, fingertips against the lace, and the fingertips impart a spin to the ball as it is thrown

How: like throwing a paper airplane...point straight ahead. Also, like a frisbee, put a spin on it when you throw it.

Why: aerodynamics. It's also easier to catch.

To throw it you put your fingers on the thread and spin it when you throw it. You do this becouse its easier to catch and it throws farther.
