I studied journalism in college. What I learned is: It's not what words you add to your vocabulary that makes you seem smarter, but it's words and phrases you shouldn't use that can make you seem smarter. For example. Do not use a lot of "like" in your sentences. For example: "I was, like, totally like, blown away, y'know?" Also, be aware of who your audience is. For example, when speaking with someone much older than you, don't say, "Hey, how'z it going." Please pay them the proper respect and say, "How are you?" I know it's old-fashioned, but manners can make you appear cultured and therefore, sophisticated. In college I learned big words are only worth 50 cents. They make one seem pompous, not smart.

There's a ->myriad<- of words that could make you sound smarter. But.....it's been said that people who use those 25 cent words aren't listened to quite as well as someone who just tells it like it is.

there are several games on the web that contain Word Power from readers digest, google a few and try them.Try to find some different types of books that interest you,and have alot of complicated words in them at the library,*but keep a dictionary handy, because it's a proven fact that the first word you come across that you don't comprehend, you'll pretty much give up on the rest of the text. Also, avoid using phrases such as "you know","do you know what I mean","do you know what I'm saying"-using these phrases several times in a conversation makes it appear that you have to use fillers because you don't have anything intelligent to express your thoughts. Some other words that may hinder you are;"LIKE",example:"So, I like, walked to the store, and I like, walked in, and I like, walked up to the counter, and I like, asked the like, clerk..."There are entire generations in this world who speak every conversation using that "L" word in every imaginable way possible, and it makes me weep.
