Well, I'd seriously go to their website and take a look around. I had a project like this my senior year mine was on gun control. Anyway, you may want to hit wikipedia, Encarta, and Peta's website. Find out what they stand for, what they do, what their opponents say, and refute the opposition. Good luck, I included some links.

PETA tends to be to conservationists, and those who believe in animal rights what Jihad Terrorists are to Islam..... the extremists. PETA is an organization with good intentions, and on some issues and in some situations even a good solution. However, more often than not they end up generating negative publicity, and come off looking a bit silly. Also they have an awful habit of providing celebrities additional media attention and more publicity while trying to admonish the celebrity.

For your class, PETA is the organization that is there to stand up for animal rights. Examples of involvement would include protesting the wearing of fur (most notably at fashion or award shows), protesting fast food companies for their treatment of the animals they serve, etc...

PETA responds to thousands of animal abuse reports. They help defend food production animals from cruelty by increasing awareness of their situations. Even if you're not compassionate to the point of being vegetarian, you can still feel that even a food animal deserves a humane life and a humane death. Peta does a lot of good work. Too bad that simple minded people will judge them only by the whacked out cases that the media reports on.

I wonder if anyone has ever hated PETA because they feel guilty? After all, when others quit eating meat for reasons of compassion and moral consideration, how might that make people feel who would never have the heart to kill a cow, pig, or chicken themselves, but who essentially pay someone else to do it every time they buy meat?

Watch this ... might help you with your debate, since your probably only going to find one side of the story out there.

The video is from the Penn & Teller series called Bull$hit.
