I tried wiping it off, but so far it has just smeared the powder. I don't want to repaint the room, so please let me know if you have found a solution to this. Thank you :)

Try Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser. It works wonders on just about anything. I had the same problem with things leaving shadows, but the Magic Eraser worked really well.

Are you sure it's not that the paint that has changed? You know if you were to remove a painting from a wall where it hung for a long time, you'd get that "shadow". It's the light that changes the paint. That's why flash isn't allow in most museums - to protect the paintings and such.

I would just take a rag and vinegar & warm water and then wipe wipe your wall.
