I lived in Costa Rica for years, and I didn't like Cahuita (as mentioned in a previous answer) because it was really run-down. However, Playa Manuel Antonio and nearby Quepos are nice towns. Beautiful beaches and other things to do as well. It's more populated. You really can't go wrong anywhere in Costa Rica. If you want to be where all the tourists go, then go to the Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Rain Forest. Otherwise, choose places like Sarchi, where the infamous ox carts are made, or lovely towns like Heredia, the city of flowers (I recommend the Hotel Valladolid there). Costa Rica is beautiful with warm and friendly folks who are willing to help you in any way possible. Pura vida!

I went to Costa Rica fall of 2005 for my honeymoon. We stayed in 3 different parts of the country: Tortuguero, Arenal, and Playa Tamarindo. Your question depends on what you like, as they are all so different. Tortuguero is a rainforest region, so it was rainy while we were there but we saw a lot of wildlife. Arenal is beautiful and is a must see because of the volcano. Tamarindo is a beach town.
I liked Arenal the best. We stayed at Tabacon Hot Springs Spa and Resort. The rooms were clean and spacious (with amazing views of the volcano on your back porch). Plus you get free admission to the next door Hot Springs (normally $30 admission). The Hot Springs are naturally heated from the volcano and there are many different "pools" to hang out in. Also there is a swim-up bar and restaurant there. You can hang out in the pool at night and watch the lava sparks and hear the volcano in the background. What an experience!!! We also did the canopy tour in Arenal. I would go back anytime!

Hi, I just got back last week. If you are talking about hotels, here is my experience.
We stayed in San Jose at the BW Irazu, it was fine and the rooms were about 80 plus tax but included airport tranfer and breakfast at Dennys.Ask for a room on a higher floor because the noise from the bar and casino is really loud.
In Arenal, near volcano, we stayed at the Paradaiso resort with 12 hot springs. About 80 again per night including a buffet breakfast. It was cloudy all the way there so we couldnt see that much.
There are lots of available hotels near the volcano-some are on the lava side and others are not. Now, it is cloudy anyway on some nights so it is a matter of luck.
It was a fun trip.

Really Depend in what do you want to do:
Costa Rica, a true paradise to nature-lovers, offers many environments to enjoy. The lush rainforests, the volcanoes, the rivers, the mountains, the beautiful beaches... all witness an unmatched blend of rich biodiversity and friendly culture.
This peaceful paradise, proud of its prosperous democracy, also caters to those who seek a way to boost their adrenaline with activities as white water rafting, canyoning, surfing and swinging from tree to tree.
