first you need to simplify x
4 + 7x = -x - 10
7x + x = -10 - 4
8x = -14
x = -14 / 8
x= -1.75

add x to each side as so
4 + 7x + x = -x -10 + x
to get
4 + 8x = -10
subtract 4 from both sides
- 4 + 8x + 4 = -10 - 4
to get
8x = -14
divide both sides by 8
8/8 x = -14/8
so
x =-14/8 = -7/4
