I recently bought a calathea; it's about 8" high, in a 6" pot. I read up on it and know that it is a tropical plant -- likes heat and humidity. However, the ends of the leaves are turning brown and crinkling up -- and then it spreads across the entire leaf within a few days {this is with fairly young leaves, too}. Is this a disease? Does it need more humidity? Plant food? Should I transplant it soon?

It sounds to me like it may not be getting enough water. It may be getting too much direct sunlight, that could parch the leaves.

I would probably think about re-potting it, something bigger to give the roots plenty of room to keep growing. Add just a little root stimulator to the water just after re-potting it.
Hope I helped.

A Yahoo search for "calathea care" (include the quotation marks in the search box) yields 16 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find the information you seek.

Good luck with your search.
