The Pony Express was a subsidiary for the freight and stage company called the Central Overland California and Pike's Peak Express Company (C.O.C. & P.P.). It began on April 3, 1860 and ended shortly after the transcontinental telegraph was completed on October 24, 1861.
Pony Express Riders averaged about 10 miles an hour on horseback over the nearly 2,000 mile route from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California, but the telegraph was much faster than even the record run of 7 days & 17 hours, and of course it was much cheaper.
