None of them was Superman. Supes is a living solar battery. He wasn't dead, just REALLY tired.
Once exposed to our sun he got better.

I'm not going to repeat what others said (or try not to repeat it all, just add to it) but none of the four were the real Superman. The Kid of Tomarow aka Superboy was later revealed to be a hybrid clone of Superman and Lex Luthor. The real Superman was revived from a deathlike state in what was called "a unique set of cicumstances". When he first came back he was greatly depowered and it was soon revealed that They Cyborg Superman was directly responsable for the destruction of Coast City. It is in the final showdown inside a huge Kryptonite powered engine that The Cyborge fires Kyrptonite energy at the real Superman. The Eradicator (one of the other pretenders) intercepts the enegry and through another "unique set of circumstances" changes the energy as it passes through him and kills him. This altered energy drastically powers up Superman to his normal (or higher) power and he puts his fist through the Cyborg's chest. He then shatters the Cyborg and retakes his role as DC's iconic hero.

Each of the Supermen was designed and ideas taken from some of the monikers that Superman is often associated with. The four new heroes were:

The Man of Steel: John Henry Irons was an ironworker and ex-weapons designer for the military who wears a suit of armor and wields a hammer. He did not claim to actually be Superman, but rather to represent the spirit of Superman and continue his legacy. Steel appeared in Superman: The Man of Steel starting with #22.
The Man of Tomorrow, also called the Cyborg Superman, arrived with augmented Kryptonian technology. He was scientifically proven to be Superman but claims amnesia in explanation to his part-mechanical nature. The Cyborg Superman appeared in 'Superman' starting with #78.
The Metropolis Kid, who hated being called Superboy, is a reckless teenage clone of Superman. This Superman appeared in the Adventures of Superman starting with #501. He is the result of the brief time Cadmus attempted to clone Superman.
The visored Last Son of Krypton is an energy-powered alien who dealt with criminals lethally. The Last Son of Krypton appeared in Action Comics starting with #687. He claims to have memories as the original Superman’s but his emotional distance makes Lois uncertain.
The first issue for each of the new heroes featured a cardboard cover and a poster of the new hero.

Gotta love that wiki

The Last Son of Krypton stole Superman's body and put it in a regeneration matrix in the Fortress of Solitude. It is revealed that the Last Son is the Eradicator, an ancient Kryptonian weapon, and the Cyborg is the deranged consciousness of Hank Henshaw, which used Superman's birthing matrix to create a physical duplicate of his body. The regeneration matrix broke open, and the original Superman emerged, greatly depowered, but alive.

Steel was John Henry Irons, The Last Son of Krypton was the Eradicator, Superboy was an almost clone and The Man of Tomorrow was the Cyborg. (The Eradicator had the body of the real Supes and was using him as a battery.)

Much like Johnny Cash, the real deal was The Man In Black. With a mullet. Plus all that stuff by the above.
