I am going to need an example . . . so I am making one up.

Let's change the mixed number 2 and 1/3 into an improper fraction.

Multiply the denominator by the whole number.

2x3=6

Then add the numerator.

6+1=7

Put it over the old denominator.

7/3

To go from improper fraction to mixed number just divide.

3 goes into seven twice with 1/3 left over.

Work for you?
