It goes something like this. The British and the French are starting a tunnel under the English channel, called the Chunnel.

The British work at .63kilometers per hour
the French at .47 km per hr.
They dug a total of 37.9 kilometers.
The British started 2.5 months early

I need to know how far each dug, and a way to solve the problem and also
if the French started Feb. 28 1988 when did they finish?(remember the british started earlier) and how you solved that.

(length dug) = (digging speed)(time elapsed- handicap)

==British side==
2.5 mo = 2.5 mo*(30 days avg./mo)*(8 h/day) = 600 h
(British length) = (.63 km/h)(t- 600)

==French side==
(French length) = (.47 km/h)(t)

==Overall work==
(British)+ (French) = 37.9 km
___ (.63)(t- 600)+ (.47)(t) = 37.9
___ 1.10t- 378 = 37.9
___ 1.10t = 415.9
___ t = 415.9/1.10 = 378.1 h

Plugging t back into the (British length) and (French length), we get
___ (French length) = (.47)(378.1) = 177.7 km
___ (British length) = (.63)(378.1- 600) = -139.8 km

I guess something's wrong with your data (probably the handicap of 2.5 months--that's a lot of time). Or else, it seems that the British were undoing the hard work of the French... (are the British supposed to bury the tunnel?! *lol*)

well, how u solve it is use the order of operations. parenthesis, exponets, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. if theres no parenthesis go 2 exponets. if theres no exponets go 2 multiplication. u get the pic right? so basically go down the row and watever pops up. EXAMPLE: n-3(5+4)-2. u would do the problem in the parenthesis 1st, then u would just start 4rm the beginning and when thers a number in front of parenthesis u multiply it by the number u get in the parenthesis.

is the 2.5 months means he is working 24 hours a day? we need to know it so that we can compute his output then subtract the no of kilometers from the other man
