a citizen who takes action in support of a political cause

Someone who is interested enough in become involved in ways that go beyond voting. Political scientists often consider someone an activist if they do at least TWO of the following:

1. Call their representatives or write them letters

2. Donate money to political causes

3. Attend the meetings of a political party

4. Talk about politics on a regular basis with people outside of the family

5. Participate in a political campaign in a way that goes beyond voting (door knocking, envelope stuffing and the like).

Note that the political science definition includes mostly mainstream activity. One might argue that activism also includes more unconventional activities like protesting and civil disobedience.

Hope this helps!
