The Russians are a former superpower who in their hayday propt up and helped Iran become what it is today. It's Kind of like they bought an insurance policy way back and now that it has hit the fan they are submitting their claim. Iran has a great deal to gain from the Russians in the way of armament and the Russians get an oil rich bud to remain a small yet somewhat relevant player in the global politics game.

The Russians will chummy up too any one with money....even the slim-ball Iranian government!

Besides the Russians are still Communist....even if all they did was change their name a lil bit.....After all Putin is the new Czar in Russian.....I am sure he will see too it that they bring back the old Soviet style government!

They fought along side them in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980's that served as the proxy war for the US-USSR.

They also are Iran's main arms supplier and have been building the "civilian" nuclear energy plants throughout Iran. They have several nuclear power plants planned at the cost of several billion dollars each. Iran supplies Russia with most of her oil and purchases most of Russia's exports.

For the same reason that the United States officials are chummy with Saudi Arabia.

Russia gets the majority of its oil from Iran. (The US gets a majority of its oil from Saudi Arabia.)

Russia is Iran's mentor, just as much as Iran is Hezbollah's mentor. Not sure how Syria fits into the whole scheme of things.
