Most likely, the mouse is faulty. Either that, or your roller (if you are not using optical) is dirty and need cleaning. Open the cover that house the roller ball, take the ball out, looking the 'hole'. You should see 2 roller on the right and botton position. If they are very dirty clean them. Use a pen-knife to scrap away the dirt on the roller. Replace the ball and the cover. test again.

Clean the ball and scrape the gunk off the rollers inside.
Also, try a different mouse pad or tape a clean piece of copier paper to the desk. Works wonders.

If it is one with a ball in it, remove the ball and clean it. Then look inside and you will see about three little wheels or bars that the ball rotates as it moves. Clean all the hair and dust bunnies off the wheels and it work work better.

Sometimes kicking or hitting or throwing things makes them work better...at least that's what I've found to be effective with my wireless mouse. A few quick slams on the desk and it's all better. lol.
Same thing goes for the old lady who does my laundry...a few swift kicks and she's good to go. (i kid, i kid. i don't kick old ladies...and i do my own laundry)

Optical/laser mouse don't have that problem, time to change your old mechanical ball mouse.

yeah it it don't help i broke 3 of them becaues i slamed them agist the wall! buy a new one !
