he was making and filming a documentary

Steve was actually a VERY accomplished and safe diver he didnt take the kind of risks underwater as he did on land. He knew his limitations diving!
Steve was filming a doco and the deeper water conditions deteriorated. So he decided to film some sting rays in shallower water for another show. He was in about 7 ft deep water above the ray swimming towards the cameraman. The ray got spooked and turned and at the same time lashed its tail up at Steve catching him in the left part of his chest. People who have seen the footage taken including marine experts and the police have said that he wasnt doing anything to the ray it was just wrong place /wrong time.
Ive actually copped a sting ray barb to the leg when I accidently stood on one wading in an estuary here in Australia fishing. I can tell you it is excruciatingly painful, but I was no where near likely to die. Steve just got hit in the wrong part of his body.
Fate....destiny whatever you want to call it, can be a real b*tch sometimes.............RIP Mate......You are a bloody legend!

He was making a documentary and according to report the Stingray felt threatened because of both Steve and camera crew. Normally they "barb" when stepped on. This entered the left side of chest. I don't think the family will want this released as it is very sad to have a brilliant naturalist be put on display.

As others have said, filming.

He was not taking precautions as rays are "harmless". The fact that the sting was in his chest, some suggest through his heart, and that Steve pulled the sting out is what killed him.

Instead of critizing him, how about praying for his family.

Steve was diving around the Great Barrier Reef in Australia filming segments for his latest documentary.

There was a giant stingray swimming under him and it got agitated and lifted it's poisonous barb-filled tail and it ended up stabbing Steve through his heart. Because the poison was going directly into his bloodstream, it killed him instantly even though he pulled the barb out.

I will truly miss him and his antics. Me and my fiance watch him nightly on Animal Planet. I even got a chance to visit Austraila Zoo in Queensland, Australia which he owns and where he films his shows. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet him personally because he was releasing a turtle back into the sea the day I visited the zoo. It was still an interesting experience watching the crocodile show live versus seeing it on tv.

Steve was one of my role models along with Jeff Corwin. I started watching their shows in 1997 when I was 17... gosh that was ages ago! I'm still a huge fan of both and I continue to follow up on their latest projects on Animal Planet. They inspired me to go into veterinary medicine.

May you rest in peace Steve. You will truly be missed!

He was down on the coast of Queensland filming a new show for animal planet called "The Worlds Deadliest" and a stingrays barb somehow pierced his heart and penetrated the left side of his chest. He then died on the seen.

Hey was filming a documentary but he actually said before he started that he was alittle uncomfortable about being in the water becuase he normally does things on land. maybe that was a sign that he refused to listen to.

His daughter had a school project about aquatic animal life and he decided he would do a documentary on dangerous wild life in the water but when he finished shooting he decided to get closer to the stingray and got on top of it, that's when it turned and pierced his heart with its tail. (RIP Steve and may God continue his work through your daughter, your life was not without purpose).
