I'm moving to Washington D.C. at the end of the year. I would like to rent a townhouse or condo. What neighborhood would you recommend? I have a 1yr old and 2 small dogs.

If you need to live in the District of Columbia proper, such as if you got a job with the DC government, then you should look first in the Northwest quadrant, because stores are better, it's far safer, and services like plowing the snow, are better. My second choice would be close-in Northeast, in the Catholic University / Brookland area.

If you don't have to live in DC, then look in Arlington or Alexandria or Fairfax county, Virginia, or Montgomery county Maryland. There are LOTS of rentals available.

Try contacting a local real estate agent. They will know everything there is to know about affordable, safe options. A really good website to browse local real estate/real estate agents is: http://www.realestateforsaleindc.com

It's really easy to navigate and is full of info about realtors with links to their personal websites. Most of their websites will have all the available homes/rentals in the area along with community info, so you can do some research before you contact anyone. Hopefully that works for you. Good luck!
