After a recent move, I plugged in my speakers and got a humming noise. Come to find out i hooked up the power cord from an old DSL modem. I switched cord and now the speakers are crackly and i can not use them. If I get new speakers, will this solve the problem or did I do damage at the entire speaker system?

I dont think you harmed the audio output on your pc if thats what you mean, I can tell you you did fry the amp circuitry in the speakers by plugging an ac adapter into them when it should have been dc.

Most likely you damaged the amplifying circuitry of the speakers. If you are talking about replacing the speakers as in open it up and replace the speaker component, that wont work.

When you say the "speaker system" of you mean the sound card in the computer, that is probably safe. Even if not, you can get the speakers first and get a sound card later as the speakers are probably dead for sure.

If you connected the dsl power to the audio input (not the power) and after that the speakers work but the sound is bad, it is possible that the speakers got "stuck" in a forward position. You might want to poke at the vibrating surface and see if it flips back to normal as a desperate attempt.
