I'm not asking this to get preached to about "smoking during pregnancy". It's a question about the baby's weight. I was talking with my mother who went to a "quit smoking" seminar and the person giving it asked how many smoked during pregnancy and if so, were their babies underweight. None of the women (about 5 or 6) who had smoked, had underweight babies. I was 7lbs 6oz and my brother was almost 10lbs.
I'm just curious to know.

People! It's just a question. I, nor anyone else, is looking for "justification". We all know the dangers these days. No need to preach.
My husband's mother smoked through all three of her pregnancies and non of them were underweight. As did both his grandmothers and mine...none of our aunts or uncles were underweight.
FYI: My brother nor I have/had asthma, allergies or a learning disability.

Reality is smoking during pregnancy can cause problems for the baby (and even after birth smoking around the baby too).
While some are born aok, at times its not apparent for decades problems that would be avoidable if not smoked at pregnacy.

out of 3 pregnancies my mom only smoked with the last my younger brother he was pre mature was 6 pound 3 ounces today he is the only one of her children that smokes. Her 1st was 8 pounds, me the 2ed 7 pounds 15 ounces. I am pregnant with my 3rd I've never smoked my kids were a Lil early 36 weeks 1st 37 2ed but were both 7 pounds. My friend Sue a heavy smoker has 4 kids all close in age all full term the smallest 8 pounds biggest 9 pounds 2 ounces. Either way this will be a preach SMOKING IS NOT OKAY people die from it. I watched a mother of 6 my moms best friend die of lung cancer at the age of 46. Her kids were not underweight but it's obvious it caused her ISSUES.

Smoking tobacco during pregnancy is very dangerous to not only the unborn child, but to the mother as well. It can result in pregancy complications for both the mother and unborn child, low birth weight, premature birth (that has a lot of it's own complications, including lower IQ), stillbirth, and a higher risk of the child dying from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) then a child whose mother did not smoke. Talk to your doctor about ways to quit smoking while you are pregnant. It will make for a better pregnancy for you and a healthier baby, that will make your life a bit easier once it is born.

My mother smoked with me and my brothers and sisters during pregnancy and I think the lowest weight out of all of us was 6 lbs 14 oz. So I would say that the underweight issues has a few holes in it, albeit there are other reasons not to smoke during pregnancy

My mom had 3 kids. Smoked with all of us. We were all large babies (9lbs 6oz, 9lbs 2oz, and 8lbs 12oz) and before anybody freaks that the babies got smaller with each pregnancy, please remember that most women have smaller babies with successive pregnancies. None of us have learning disabilities (all of us are successful well adjusted adults) and none of us have health issues.
I also smoked with my son. He was an 8lb baby boy. He was not "underweight" nor is he developmentally challenged. In fact, he's bigger than most 2 year-olds and he's not even 15 months.
And like you, I question the statistics that site low or under weight babies. My stat teacher in college said that "figures lie and liars figure."

I worked with a lady who smoked through all 9 months of all 3 of her pregnancies, including one which I was around to see. All 3 of her kids were under weight. The 3rd was just over 5lbs at full term. Also, my cousin smoked during both of her pregnancies and both of her sons were underweight. I suppose some people don't encounter that, but statistically it is supposed to not only produce undeweight babies, but also make the child susceptible to asthma and allergies. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you came here to try to get someone to justify yours or someone else's choice to smoke during pregnancy, I'm sure you'll find plenty of people who are fine with it and will find some reason to say it's ok. If you don't want people to get preachy, don't post controversial topics.
You're all very lucky (you and your brothers, etc...) to be perfectly healthy in every way. Of course, you never know the effects on your ultimate life span...but who cares about that, right? Smoke up!

I smoked with my pregnancy, And yes my baby was
underweight, She weighed 4lbs 9oz and 17 inches, But thank god she was very healthy and my dr. followed her development closely, He said that it was just because she was going to be a very small baby
to begin with, though I believe smoking during pregnancy had
alot to do with it. My daughter is now 22 mos. old healthy and smart as a whip. with her i smoked about 6 cigarettes a day.
