In UNIX what command would you use to ensure all files you create will not have read access for others?

chmod will change permissions of the file....

if you do chmod 600 then you'll make the owner, the only person who can read or write.

chmod a-r subdir

There is one more cmdline switch to make the attribute permanent applying to future man chmod to read it.
