I just brought a new iron and already it has brown liquid seeping from the holes an onto my clothes. What is the "BROWN" stuff that builds onto the irons surface and thru the holes? Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Is there a way to clean it off once it does take place? Are there certain products that you can use either way (to prevent or to treat)?

I have never had an iron do this before. I think you need to rinse it out maybe.

Are you empyting the water out of your iron after using it? It would be a good idea for you to buy distilled water from the grocery store and it must be distilled water only. The brown liquid seeping from your iron is called RUST. By using distilled that won`t happen anymore but now to get the rust out. Fill your iron opening with dis water and put down a heavy old towel or sheet and let the iron steam go on the sheet. You may have to do thie several times to get rid of the russt!! Good Luck to you!!!!

Different irons have different instructions. My iron will leak brown water if it's used with distilled water instead of tap water; other irons do the opposite. You can try filling it with water and then pouring the water out, and do this a few times. And some irons will clean themselves if you fill them with water, turn them on high, hold them horizontally and blast steam onto a rag or towel. I have also hear that it can help if you put a mixture of vinegar and water into your iron and leave it a few hours, then rinse it out several times with plain water.

If you can fin the instructions for you iron, take a look. Also, you might find information on the internet about your specific model of iron.

By "just" bought, do you mean a few days? Return the iron.

Don't use tap water; it may have impurities.

Don't have the iron on the "steam" setting when ironing at lower temperatures.

Clean the iron; the newer ones should have a "clean" setting on the steam selection.

Mineral build up from your water. Fix with lime-a-way or similar product (follow the product directions).

Use distilled or filtered water in the iron to prevent the problem.

nothing should be brown. it could be rust or you burnt something on the iron that has left a residue that is being taken off by leaking water. first remove the water from the iron unless your using it to steam wrinkles out. and you really dont have to use water at all if you go by spray starch which does a better job of keeping clothes wrinkle free all day. and clean your iron with steel wool to remove any left over residue/rust

It's rust. Clean the iron with vinegar, as the previous answerer has said, and use ONLY distilled, deionized or soft water in your iron from here on out.

try using distilled vinegar, just like you would to clean your shower head. however dont use the vinegar in a plugged in or iron thats on. just soak it then use a soft steel wool on the outside to remove any left over scaling. another solution is descaling solution used for humidifiers. always use on a cold and unplugged appliance
