i will never forget the image of steve irwin talking to the camera while sharks were in a feeding frenzy all around him while he stood in the water...the guy was a crazy kook but he was fascinating, funny and very entertaining...i kind of felt one day his luck would run out the way he took risks dealing with wildlife but i would never have guessed it would take a stingray to be the culprit....my condolences to his friends and family....he was one of a kind and his legacy will continue as his shows run on animal planet

The gist of it was, that he was swimming along the shallow waters of Queensland Australia, intending upon filming the great barrier reef and studying marine life surrounding it when he accidentally swam too close to a sting ray. The poisonous barb went straight through his heart, piercing it deeply. It was described as a "freak accident". The death was all caught on film as well. He rose up and pulled the stinger out of his heart/chest. After doing so he fell unconscious and soon after died. The barbs on sting rays range from about 20 to 30cm long, you do the conversion. People do not usually die from the poison, but from the trauma of having a stinger pierce deeply into them. He was pronounced dead at around noon in Australian time, about 10pm on Sunday in the eastern time of the U.S. I believe. Also, I believe that, had he not pulled the stinger out of his chest, he would have a even slightly higher chance of survival, you know, to keep the hole plugged.
I hope this has helped.

Steve Irwin died doing what he did best, showing the world the beauty and dangers of nature. Stingrays have a defense mechanism in their tails of a barb that can be as long as 10 inches and fill with painful poisons. Unfortunately, this barb slipped under his ribcage and punctured his heart. He probably would have lived if it just hit his ribcage, he just would have been in some really bad pain. My heart goes out to his wife and children for living with such a devoted and enthusiastic man. He will be missed.

he was filming a documentary called the Ocean's Dangerous. He was filming in the Great Barrier Reef. He was 3 feet above a stingray and the stingray stabbed him right in the heart. So he pulled it out, but it was too late. The venom already went to his heart which killed him. His funeral was in Queensland and his family was there two. Hundreds of people put notes and letters and flowers next to him. I was shocked when i found this out. Wasn't really expecting him to die. At least he had a good life.

He got stuck in the heart with the stinger of a sting ray. He pulled it out when he should have left it in, and he die a few minutes after they brought him up from the water. It is very sad! He seemed pretty cool, and he has two kids one 8 and one 2 years old.

He was filming a documentary off the coast of Port Douglas in Queensland, Australia. He swam over a large stingray, and it pierced his heart with its poisonous barb. He was dead within seconds. Everyone here in Australia is in absolute shock, especially here in Queensland. We honestly can't believe it. He was so loved, and will be greatly missed.

He was swimming in the ocean and he collided with a stingray, the tail barb of the stingray puctured through his ribs and into his heart. He died almost instantly, but the actual poison of the stingray did not kill him, it was the hole that was punctured into his heart that did it. Crikey!

He was filming a documentary and a stingray barb struck him in the chest, leaving a hole in his heart. The barb was laced with poison and the hole in his heart and the poison is what killed him. Poor guy:( At least it was quick.
