The founding fathers put in so many checks and balances to keep one man from becoming a dictator.
Saying how many years in office, who could change the government.
Keeping government out of religion, which seems to be the hardest rule to follow. Everyone wants prayer in the classroom and to force their religion on the students. We have to keep it seperate to keep it free.
