WIFI(Wireless Internet) is for browsing the internet without needing a desktop PC. The adapter is a key signal that picks up on frequencies that are the same wave lengh of the PSPs WIFI connection, and if the signal is strong enough you can browse the internet with no problems what so ever. Why you need it for the PSP is not a factor, because it's a luxury, people get it to have internet on the go, in a way similar to a cell phone.

Wireless (WIFI) allows a device to connect to the internet without actually connecting any cables up to it. Portable devices (such as PSP) find this feature very useful. A wireless adapter is simply the electronics that allows the device [you want to connect to the internet] to link up. The PSP has this integrated. The wireless internet connection can be provided by a 3rd party or you can purchase a wireless router and supply your own.
