I'm going to ask the doctor, but I just wondered if anyone knew for sure.

my issue isn't as much with not enough calories as with not enough energy. My mom thinks I'm not getting enough protien because since I've been pregnant I've gone off of meat. I also have irritable bowel, so my diet is limited anyway.

My personal recommendation would be to stay away from the supplements. You should talk to your doctor first and foremost. You should be taking a pre-natal vitamin as well as eating a healthy and balanced diet. There is a lot of protein in peanut butter and beans. Go to the book store and look through the pregnancy diet books for one that fits your lifestyle. I know that there are books for vegetarians. There are certain foods that make you feel tired and others that will give you more energy. You also should have a blood test to be sure you are not anemic. This is not uncommon when you are pregnant. If you are anemic, you will probably have to take an iron supplement, which will cause constipation so you will have to add more fiber to your diet. Dried prunes and figs are good sources of iron, calcium and fiber. Also, drink plenty of water. Try to eat as healthy as possible and get yourself one or two good reference books. Good Luck!

YES.
Many midwives will recommend drinks like Ensure, protein shakes, or Carnation Instant Breakfast to moms who are having trouble getting enough calories or gaining weight. These kind of shakes can be used for a good SNACK but should NOT replace MEALS.

Ensure actually makes a nutrional drink called Ensure Healthy Mom. They make snack bars as well. They are actually really good. They should have them at your local grocery store.

Yes, some mothers need extra nutrients and they make an Ensure especially for that reason. Your doctor will tell you about it. If you are having trouble gaining weight it will even assist with that.

That is all up to your doctor. Some people don't need to drink them because they can gain to much weight, but some need it to help gain weight

Ensure makes one for Pregnant and nursing moms. My OB/GYN actually gave me a sample of it but it was really nasty tasting. There was a can of the drink and one of the snack bars and the snack bar tasted like chalk with chocolate on it. GROSS!

It should be because they have those in sample bags at motherhood maternity and they also have ones just geared towards pregnant women. Read the label, but I would think is ok

Absolutely not! You should only take what the doctor says you should take. That's why they will give you prenatal vitamins, that is all the vitamins you need.
