it's an individual weakness that should not be the problem or have anything to do with society. However since the world can not be perfect it IS a social problem beacuse other individuals who should not have to suffer the consequences of alcoholics pay taxes and higher health care to cover alcoholics who become injured or suffer health conditions because of their drinking and are broke. So yes it is a social problem but not for the reasons MOST people care to think it is.

No! It's not a social problem. It's a personal problem. Society doesn't get cravings in the middle of the night, sweat like a pig in anticipation of another hit and society won't kick the habit for you. You may start to drink or use drugs for "social reasons". Abusing substances is very personal.

It seems the current social viewpoint is that alcohol and drug abuse is Not a social problem, but a personal one. If you are a little familiar with social theories, you could integrate labeling theory or possibly "social construction" as a theoretical framework for your paper. Good Luck!

Make sure when you write your paper you use spell check. Drugs are a social problem since there is no level of "casual" drug use vs. addiction. Alcohol can be used socially without leading to alcoholism, but America has millions of alcoholics. When researching your paper why not attend an Open "NA" and/or "AA" meeting---you can gain tons of info. there!

Well if you are arguing against it being a social problem (so difficult, how'd you get stuck with that?) then try
-is widespread over many cultures, not just one.
-is widespread over many ages (teen to old ppl)
-is widespread over many classes (royalty and common ppl)
-is widespread over many professions
-is widespread over every race
-is widespread over every sex
-persists whether the society campaigns against the drugs/alcohol and funds 'recovery' programs or whether the society does absolutely nothing to solve the problem.
-has been an issue for hundreds of years, in many societies, etc.
This problem is in no way limited to a single society.
Good Luck!
