There is an actual answer to this question. The Devil's Advocate is an official position in the canonization process (the procedure that recognizes saints in the Roman Catholic Church). The Church appoints a scholar, the Devil's Advocate, to investigate and challenge the claim that a deceased individual deserves official sainthood.

The devil's advocate could argue that the candidate's supposed miracles were phony or unsubstantiated, that he beat his wife, that he stole from the collection plate, etc.

The Church body that governs canonization is the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. The Congregation ultimately makes the case for sainthood whereas the Devil's Advocate attempts to refute it. Therefore, the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints is the opposite of the Devil's Advocate.

Some who portrays the negative side of the situation.and pushes for it. so the other has to really have to think, and see that dark side before proceeding. A kind of challenge to the opposite poles. A lot of "What Ifs. "
