Do the sum

The Solar system is about 10 light hours across (pluto is about 5 light hours away from the sun).

10 light hours is approximately 1000th of a light year (let's use nice round numbers)

Therefore in the model, 1mm = 1000th light year

Therefore 1 lt yr = 1 metre

Galaxy is 100,000 lt yrs approx.

Therefor in the model it is 100,000 metres

= 100 kilometres (about 60 miles)

So, if the Solar System is 1 millimetre (25th inch), the Milky Way is about 100 km (60 miles) across.

Food for thought.

(Wow, dumb blonde thinks the Solar System is the Milky Way. Yikes.)

If the diameter of Pluto's orbit was 1 mm., then the diameter of the Milky Way would be about 100 km. But the definition of the size of the solar system is a bit arbitrary. There are probably objects orbiting the Sun nearly 2 light years away. If you use this definition of the size of the solar system, and its diameter is 1 mm., then the diameter of the Milky Way would only be 25 metres.

Hi. The Milky Way is about 100,000 light years across. The Solar System is about 1 light DAY across. How many days are there in 100,000 years.
